Golf Clubs 101: Getting the Right Driver “Go the distance” with the golf clubs you buy… You know the scene: the pro makes his effortless approach to the tee on the 17th hole. He’s looking for a birdie on this hole to give him a comfortable lead going into the final hole of the tournament. The golf clubs he uses are like an extension of his body. Without a hint of hesitation, the driver slices through the air and connects with the ball right in the middle of the sweet spot. On this par 5 hole, a long drive is crucial. The announcer yells that the drive is a beauty, at 310 yards! How did he find the golf clubs he uses? Are they a matched set from one manufacturer? Did he buy them at a golf clubs dealer? Hardly. Besides the endorsements that golf clubs manufacturers seek from professionals in exchange for compensation, there are many factors that influence the pro golfer’s selection of the right driver, indeed, the right golf clubs, for him or her. One big factor the pro must consider is whether the golf clubs are approved by the USPGA/USLPGA and other governing bodies. There are scientifically-proven golf clubs available which would give a pro unfair advantage over his competitors. Those clubs are disapproved for professionals or for amateur tournaments. But, if you are playing casually, you can buy golf clubs on the Internet that will boost your drives and all of your shots by 10 to 20%. The performance factor for selecting golf clubs is crucial. Do the golf clubs deliver the results the pro is looking for? When testing a driver, what is the pro’s experience? Does it “go the distance” for the pro’s expectations? Does the driver give the lift needed? Does it help keep the ball in a straight line for the entire drive? Also, the pro wants a driver to “feel good” and agree with his physical body. Finally, there is the cost factor, but this is one that usually matters little to the pro golfer. Since most of us are not golf pros, our selection of golf clubs, including the very important driver, may not be as stringent as the factors affecting a pro’s choice. But, as in all sports, watching the professionals can help the fans improve their own games. And selecting the right driver will get you farther down the fairway, reduce your number of strokes, and help you feel the confidence and pride of a pro. |
